Following hot on the heels of the Wii’s motion capture technology, Microsoft are hoping to trump this one better with Xbox 360 Project Natal. Announced at last year’s E3 conference, this optional hardware for the Xbox 360 is claimed to permit utterly controller-free interaction with games, sensing movement and interpreting that as commands within the title.

Xbox 360 Project Natal is said to be released round the Q4 of 2010, and Microsoft hope that the hardware will become an integral part of all existing Xbox consoles. They also say this revolutionary technology will stretch the lifespan of the 360 significantly, and is, for all intents and purposes, a next-gen accessory.

The hardware contains a depth sensor joined with an RGB camera, which allows the Xbox 360 Project Natal a 360 degree arc of interpretation. The recognition is so accurate that even slight facial nuances can be retained and displayed on-screen. The range of recognition may also be extended or shortened as the gamer sees fit, with the possibility of picking up surrounding objects like tables or cupboards.

Aswell as movement, the Xbox 360 Project Natal also boasts the ability to interpret audio. The multi-array microphone included may be employed to register audio and convert vocal recognition on the television. These features mix to offer total interactivity between gamer and game.

As the software employed to make both Natal and the titles it will engage with is reasonably unique, Microsoft have stated that existing Xbox 360 titles probably won’t support the hardware, and that a fresh range of titles are presently in progress. Various technical demos shown at E3 saw Space Invaders Extreme and Paint Party, a title in which sacks of paint are manipulated by the gamer to paint surfaces.

Winter will tell as to whether theXbox 360 Project Natal will have the awe Microsoft are wanting. While the technology iscertainly revolutionary and due to trump even the Wii’s signature card, Microsoft need to announce more interesting titles to capture increased consumer interest.
